“you can keep your hat on”

The Libertines front man made his debut after signing for margate fc officially in the ‘gates first preseason  game against Tonbridge Angels.

TFM Owner Russel Goldsmith with Pete Doherty

Ahead of The Libertines’ hometown gig at Dreamland, front man Pete Doherty showed his footballing ability at Hartsdown Park in front of a large crowd of Margate supporters and Libertines fans.

Pete was seen signing autographs before the game and taking selfies with fans. It was also the launch of the new home and away Margate strips, hosting the lead sponsors (The Libertines) logo on the front. The shirts were selling fast, with queues for the club shop stretching the length of the pitch.

Pete was also seen in the supporter’s kiosk with an issue of Thanet Football Magazine in hand and promoting the Margate Official Supporters Club. He was also trying to sell everything, including an old lamp that was in the kiosk. No luck there though unfortunately.

TFM owner caught up with Pete ahead of the game and suggested he should leave his hat on whilst playing… and he did! (pictured left) …for the entire 20 seconds he was on the pitch before being substituted.

“fans out in force”
at dreamland – margate

Dreamland was a sea of Margate FC kits as The Libertines sellout hometown gig crowd (on the 5th July 2025), saw a host of old and new kits boasting The Libertines sponsorship on the front. Pete was also seen with his match-worn shirt draped over the speakers as he sang to the large crowd.

russel’s thoughts:

“I had the privilege of attending The Libertines concert after watching Pete’s debut for The ‘Gate.

The atmosphere was buzzing, and the amount of Margate shirts in the crowd was unreal. Everywhere you looked there was a Margate shirt, ranging from the new kits to the old, and the limited-edition kits with the concert date on the front.  Shirts were also on sale at the venue, with huge queues waiting to get their hands on this souvenir from a brilliant show. “
