Ramsgate Veterans picked up their first points of the season

Ramsgate picked up their first points of the season with a home win against a dogged Baypoint side.

Ramsgate started off the brightest keeping possession and moving the ball well however decision making in the final third continuously let them down. As the rams frustrations grew Baypoint took a foothold in the game forcing man of the match Daryl Pearson into some routine saves.

As the half continued Baypoint suffered a couple of injuries and with only having one substitute available began to struggle. Ramsgate buoyed by this regained control of the game however following another errant pass in the final third Manager Jackson had seen enough. A change saw Steve Miller introduced onto the right wing and a shuffle of the Rams defence.

The rejigged rams finally found some cohesion and Miller ghosted into the box to score his second goal in two games! Some might say a managerial masterstroke!

The Miller change saw Aaron Smith promoted to the other flank after starting the game at left back. With the Baypoint right back Pettman struggling with an injury Smith was encouraged at every opportunity to take advantage.

A loose pass to the injured Pettman saw Smith pounce onto the ball, take possession and cut inside from there the result was inevitable, his left foot shot found the inside of the far post and 2-0 to the Rams.

With both sides tiring towards the break in the heat at St Luke’s the next goal was always going to be crucial in determining the result. Ramsgate were on top but all their hard was almost undone as a mistake from Buster Morris saw the Baypoint striker through on goal however Pearson bailed his centre half out and tipped the shot over the bar.

The importance of that save was then evident when minutes later ex-Baypoint midfielder and now Ram Paul Barrett capped off a neat team move started by Miller to make it 3-0 at the break.

The second half saw a change in momentum Baypoint looked the better side and were creating chances. Crucial interventions from Rattenbury, Gunn and the excellent Morris in the rams defence alongside more saves from Pearson kept the hosts in the lead.

With fresh legs needed Ramsgate bolstered the midfield with Hills and Jackson from the bench to support Alan Garrett leaving the hard working Lewis Clement to lead the line alone. The changes allowed Ramsgate to control the game and with a late Sin Bin to a Baypoint player Ramsgate held out comfortably to win 3-0.
