sunday league overview – 05/05/24

This weekend saw only a few games being played as the season draws to a close and the final league and cup games being played.

The newly formed The Prince Albert FC took on Aussie Arms FC at Jacky Bakers and the final score was 4-4. Goals from Damien Daniels, Chris Quine and a brace from Dillon Harris earning the Albert a draw after being 4-1 down, showing great character and determination. The Prince Albert FC will start in Division 2 next season along with a new team called “Shrimpo FC” in memory of Stephen Shrimpton.

Jacky Bakers also saw Windmill FC take on the Hussar FC with the Hussar only needing a point to secure the Division 1 title.

Windmill FC match review from Instagram

With the Hussar needing only a point to win the league, it was time for the Windmill to crash the party and take control of the title race. However, the boys started slowly and went behind early doors, which led to wild celebrations on the Hussar sidelines, who were finally thinking they could be getting the champagne out after 4 months of waiting. With the goal, this sparked the boys into life with loads of joy coming down the right hand side. A quick response followed via a marauding run down the flight flank from Dayne Cuming who perfectly picked out Sonny to head home from close range. From this point, there was only going to be one winner in this game. Dayne was running riot down the right, ably supported by Josh Lowther. A second came when a Rob Salisbury free kick snuck round the wall to find the near post. At this point, the boys were well on top and some good Sonny pressure led to him nicking the ball and squaring it to Jamie Brown who coolly slotted to send the boys 3-1 up into the break.

The second half, well what else is there to say other than complete an utter domination. Windmill turned on the style and showed the clear gulf in quality between the two sides. More relentless pressure led to Dayne pinching the ball from the keeper to then find JB who squared to Dan Todd who made it 4. From this point, the scoreline could have been whatever we wanted and we made it 5 when Sonny beat his man and made his way to the byline to perfectly pick out Toddy for his 2nd. The hat-trick shortly followed from the penalty spot after smart work from JB to earn the penalty. The icing on the cake followed, when went on a mazy run to beat 3 men to calmly slot into the bottom corner, for a potential goal of the season contender to make it 7-1 and bring an end to an utterly dominating performance.

Next week is a chance for the boys to secure the league title with 3 points vs Monkton.

Lanthorne FC match report from instagram

Challenge Cup – Another semi final and another win for the boys, where we dominated from minute 1. A few half chances before Skipper Billy Munday put a great ball through to striker to Neil who put the ball in the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to the boys. After dominating the ball after our goal Robinson only scores worldies and it was another to add to the tally to double our lead before half time. After half time Max Taffs fucked up and let Monkton back into the game with them halving our lead, 9 minutes later Billy Munday cut in and rifled the ball in from 25 yards to put us 3-1 up, from then we were dominant. 4-1 shortly followed when Billy became provider for forgotten man Ryan Lewis to header in from close range, straight back on the attack and Joe Anderson went through one on one when he got taken down by the defender leaving the referee no choice but to point the spot, as you can see Billy converted from the spot to make it 5-1 to Lanthorne. After Monkton to kick off we was pressing off the back & 4 minutes after Billy’s penalty some great link up play and the final ball from Jordan Day put the ball through to Billy to complete his hat trick and also bring him to 20 goals for us this season. The Gaffer then took Skipper off for Alex Epps who shortly after repaid the favour by a great quick turn and finish to put the boys 7-1 up, the scoring was finished up and secured our final place with Neil popping up at the back post with a great header to round off the scoring & to put us through to yet another final.

Lanthorne FC 8-1 Monkton FC
